Gotcha.!!!! A mistake? No. a Dysfunctional and Bureacratic Immigration System? Yes
Polish-born scientist who conducted research for nearly 14 years at the University of Idaho is facing deportation, apparently because she continued working for eight months after an immigration document expired, The Spokesman-Review, a newspaper in Spokane, Wash., reports.
The researcher, Katarzyna Dziewanowska, and her lawyer say the university told her at the time that it was OK to continue working because of a grace period on temporary work permits. They later learned, they say, that the grace period did not apply to the type of document Ms. Dziewanowska held, and U.S. immigration officials cited that breach in denying her application for permanent residency in June.
Ms. Dziewanowska was recruited to Idaho in 1994 and has been involved in studying methods of fighting biological agents, such as the plague, that could be used in germ warfare. She hopes to appeal the decision on her residency status to an immigration judge, but that could take years and, in the meantime, she cannot work.
